Lesson 6: Social Media & Messaging
Lesson 6 of 6
Social media and messaging apps help people stay connected, but scammers also use them to impersonate friends, family, and businesses.
Protect Personal Information
- Avoid posting your full address, birthday, or travel plans publicly
- Share photos and updates only with people you trust
- Review privacy settings from time to time
Be Careful with Friend Requests
Some scam accounts pretend to be someone you know. If a new account appears for a friend or relative, confirm with them another way before accepting it.
Watch for Urgent Messages
- Requests for gift cards, money, or secret help are common scam signs
- Messages asking for verification codes should be treated with caution
- Do not click links sent unexpectedly, even from a known name
Use Messaging Apps Safely
It is okay to ignore messages from unknown numbers or accounts. If someone pressures you to respond quickly, stop and verify who they are first.
Simple Safety Habit
When a message creates panic, excitement, or pressure, pause. A real friend or business will still be there after you take a moment to check.
