Lesson 2: Email Safety
Lesson 2 of 6
Email is a common way scammers try to trick people. Learning a few warning signs can help keep you safe.
What Is Email?
Email is a way to send messages and information over the internet. Banks, stores, friends, and family all use email.
Warning Signs of a Scam Email
- The message feels urgent or threatening
- The sender asks for passwords or money
- Spelling or grammar looks unusual
- The email comes from someone you do not know
Links and Attachments
Do not click links or open attachments unless you are sure who sent them. Scammers often hide harmful links in emails.
If You Are Unsure
It is okay to pause. You can delete the email or ask a trusted person for help.
What Is Phishing?
Phishing is when scammers pretend to be a trusted organization, such as a bank, delivery company, or government office, to trick you into giving personal information.
Common Phishing Tricks
- Messages saying there is a problem with your account
- Emails asking you to confirm information right away
- Links that look real but lead to fake websites
- Unexpected messages about refunds, prizes, or deliveries
How to Protect Yourself
Do not click links or share personal information from an email. If you are concerned, contact the organization directly using a phone number or website you trust.
